Suicide is generally viewed as negative in our society, and survivors must cope with feelings of shame for their lost love ones decision. Grief work is also made difficult by lingering thoughts of the idea that such a death should have been entirely preventable. Parents wonder what they did wrong -did they not show enough love? Where they responsible for making their child feel such pain? Other loved ones wonder how they could have missed the suicidal signs. They remember every argument, every negative comment they made, and feel almost certain that they alone are to blame for this persons death. Thus, the suicide victim, instead of seeking further help for problems, ends the pain, forgetting the message they are sending to those left behind. Most people consider suicide of a terminally ill individual to be more acceptable than that of a physically, though arguably not emotionally healthy person. Is this type of suicide still selfish? The suicide victim understands that the family will grieve if they die now, but they know that they will die soon and wonder why it is necessary to prolong this time of pain. What they dont realize is that they force their families to live with the knowledge that their loved one died not as a direct result of disease, but rather by their own hand. Perhaps it is selfish for them to stop their pain and end their lives now instead of waiting for their time, but it is just as selfish for surviving families to force a terminally ill loved one to remain living with such pain because they will be missed. Thus, the selfishness concerning this type of suicide can be considered dual-sided. There are cases that must not be overlooked in which suicide is actually beneficial to other people, making it a genuinely selfless act. Such an example is a prisoner of war who must choose to die by his or her own sword, rather than leak information to the enemies that would compromise the safety of fellow solders. Another example would be a pilot whose plane is about to crash over a populated area. If he steers the plane away from the city, he will not have the opportunity to escape alive, but if he ejects now to save himself many innocent people will die. Though the pilot is not actively harming himself in this manner, he sees his death as the best solution to his problem, and thus fits the definition of a selfless suicide. The concept of selfless suicide also has its flaws- while some are helped by the act, others may be hurt. When the soldier takes his or her own life for the sake of the country, the act is committed for the benefit of others. At the same time, the family of the soldier is stricken with grief over losing their loved one. Can there be suicide that does not harm anyone? Not unless there can be death without pain. A completely unselfish suicide still has the ability to negatively impact others. Suicide has so many facets that it seems erroneous to classify the act as wholly selfish or unselfish. Selfishness does not necessarily have to be a negative thing-it is in our innate nature to take care of our own needs, and we are thus all guilty. We have read and analyzed the historical fiction text, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas , by John Boyne. We have also read and analyzed various non-fiction texts, examined propaganda posters, analyzed photos, and also listened to and analyzed various eye-witness testimonies. We have come to understand that the Holocaust was one of the worst genocides in world history during which time six million Jews, and millions of others, were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany. There are many central themes throughout the novel and the author utilizes it through the main characters of the story. Innocence is an important theme throughou t the novel. Although Bruno and Shmuel share a certain childlike innocence, the reality is that Shmuel is a prisoner in Auschwitz and has certainly seen horrific sights. Bruno, on the other hand, is fiercely protected by his parents who do not want him to know about the horrors of the reality that is the Holocaust; in particular, they go to great lengths to keep the details of Bruno's father's job a secret from him. The juxtaposition of such innocence with the inherent evil of the Holocaust sets a disturbing tone. This theme increases the idea that hatred and prejudice are learned behaviors. A nother significant theme in the novel is friendship. The desire for friendship is universal and at no time is it more important than during childhood. Bruno and Shmuel exist in two completely different worlds but share a connected desire for f riendship during a difficult and lonely time. In spite of differences , Bruno and Shmuel have a meaningful friendship. As their friendship develops, it is teste d on many occasions as the boys are lead to their individual realities. When Shmuel is brought to Bruno's house to work as a servant, Bruno denies knowing him and giving him food; consequently, Shmuel is punished for stealing food (which Bruno had given him). Both boys know that they would be in terrible trouble if anyone were to find out about their friendship so they keep it a secret. Ultimately, the boys unknowingly march to their death hand in hand with no one in the world but each other. The theme of human nature also proves to be central to the story. Readers will question how Bruno's father and sister, along with so many other Germans, can be such loyal believers in the Nazi propaganda while Bruno remains compassionate and even, some might argue , to the same ideas. Bruno and Shmuel represent all that is kind and noble in humans as well as the potential that they have to do well. Interchangeably , Bruno's father and Lieutenant Kotler reveal man's capacity for evil. The novel points out the choice humans must make regarding how they treat others. African -American history predated the emergence of the United States as an independent country, and African – American literature was similarly in deep roots. Jupiter Hammon who was considered as the first published Black writer in America. In 1761, he published his first poem named â€Å"An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries†. Through his poem, he implemented the idea of a gradual emancipation as a way to end slavery. His idea was later reprinted in some works such as â€Å"Le Mulatre† a short story published in 1837 by Victor Sejour and Clotel; or, The President’s Daughter (1853) by William Wells Brown. The second African American writer was â€Å"Lucy Terry†. She was stolen from America and sold into slavery in Rhode Island as an infant. She spent time in Rhode Island, up until the age of five, when she was sold to Ebenezer Wells of Deerfield. At the time, an Indian attack occurred in an area of Deerfield called â€Å"T he Bars†, which was a colonial term for a meadow. At the age of 16, Lucy Terry wrote her first work â€Å"Bars Fight†, a ballad about an attack of Deerfield. The Ballad was preserved orally until it was published in 1855 in Josiah Holland’s History of western Massachusetts. Wheatley was the contemporary of Lucy Terry.
